Nebraska’s New State Motto

Just now a coworker and I were discussing Nebraska’s surprising status as a potential swing state in the presidential election. I was trying to describe the cultural dynamic of a state that is “Western” on one half and “Midwestern” on the other (with a little bit of “St. Louis” in the Second District, I guess). Then I realized I had inadvertently coined a new state motto:

Nebraska: where Wyoming meets Iowa.

The 100th meridian, that north-south stretch across the middle of Nebraska and the rest of the country, and its bordering areas, is the approximate meeting place of east and west USA. A rural area, settled late in the history of the frontier, it has become depopulated and, as the people have moved east or west away from that area, the country has sort of come apart. They, with diverse backgrounds on their movements west from Europe or the eastern USA, glued this country together. Well, maybe.....
