The Thing About the Other Guy Running for President
If, two years ago, someone had said to me: “Hey Paul, in two years John McCain will be the Republican nominee for president,” I’d have been really happy. Not because I agree with the guy — he’s about my political opposite — but because since 2000 I’ve thought John McCain was a basically honorable guy who would be a basically honorable president.
Until about 10 days ago, I thought (hoped, actually) the 2008 election might run out like the 1996 election. Sure, I didn’t actually agree with Bob Dole on any issues particularly, but I just couldn’t see that it would matter very much to the country if were elected (or not elected).
