Over the Hill
Published 2012-03-23
After a week of riding I have a pretty respectable start on my latest stupid idea. 13,357' of 105,312'. I’ve ridden 9764' this week and it spawned a second stupid idea. I spend my off-bike time fantasizing about my next climb over The Hill. This is more sustained physical effort than I’ve had for more than a long time, and my body lets me know it. I ache all the time. I fall into bed in a stupor at 9pm and saw logs straight to morning, yesterday as late as 7am. This might be the first three or four days of solid sleep I’ve had since … can’t remember when, actually. Since my job title was archaeologist? Maybe since I rode down the Oregon Coast ten (!) years ago? I’m not naturally a sleeps-through-the-night person.
The unseasonably snowy weather has kind of catalyzed me. Normally I beg off riding over the hill in very wet weather, but I feel extra bad-assy doing it in the snow. Pouring rain? We’ll see …
Meanwhile, despite the lack of reportage, I’m gaining some traction on the stupidest awesome idea. I’ll have something small to show off next week.
Two and a half stupid personal projects have provided me a little focus. I admit it: from last fall (since the end of cyclocross season? Hmmmm … ) until this last week I’ve a pretty grumpy dude. Maybe it’s more physical activity, maybe it’s more sleep, whatever. I affect being all “the journey is the destination” but it’s nice to have somewhere specific to point my wheels.
